CHARLESTON, S.C. - The fifth-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team heads to the 2012 Admiral's Cup hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on April 21-22 in King's Point, N.Y., and the SAISA Women's Championships hosted by Clemson on April 21-22 in Clemson, S.C.
The Cougars received one first-place vote in the latest Sailing World College Coed Rankings, presented by Sperry Top-Sider on April 19, behind No. 1 Yale, No. 2 Georgetown, No. 3 Roger Williams and No. 4 Stanford.
CofC will be one of the top 20 teams in the nation fielding the highly-competitive Admiral's Cup. The Cougars will send junior All-American skipper Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.) and senior All-American crew Perry Emsiek (Corona del Mar, Calif.) to compete in A-Division, along with junior skipper Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and senior All-American crew Alyssa Aitken (Sandwich, Mass.) in B-Division and senior All-American Zeke Horowitz (Sarasota, Fla.) in the laser C-Division. Senior Sam Stokes (Norfolk, Va.) will serve as an alternate crew.
The No. 11-ranked women's team will sail senior skipper Corey Hall (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and junior crew Sarah Scudder (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) in A-Division and sophomore skipper Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) and junior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) in B-Division at the SAISA Women's Championships. Sophomore Jenny Powell (Blue Hill, Maine) will be on hand as alternate crew.
"The women should be really confident going into this weekend's event," CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. "We had a share of disappointment last weekend, but should have a great showing at Clemson against in-district competition. We have been practicing hard this week and have sailed in big fleets all year. We should have a lot confidence going into the Admiral's Cup."
The first-place SAISA team gets directly seeded into the finals of the ICSA Women's National Championships to be held on May 30-June 2 in Lake Travis, Texas, while the second-place team will sail in the semifinals.
