RICHMOND, Va. – Freshman Mary Kate Bowers of the College of Charleston women's soccer team has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week as announced Monday by the league offices.
Bowers initiated her collegiate career in style with a goal in each of CofC's opening weekend contests, including the game winner in a thrilling, 2-1 double overtime victory over crosstown rival Charleston Southern on Sunday night.
Her late-game heroics propelled the Cougars to their first 2-0 start since 2008. The freshman from Raleigh, N.C., attempted nine shots in her first two games and put eight of them on target.
Bowers and the rest of the Cougars travel to Columbia, S.C., to take part in the Garnett and Black Classic where they'll face off against Milwaukee and Boston University on Friday, Aug. 29 and Sunday, Aug. 31, respectively.
