TOWSON, Md. – Erin Hall and Bre Bolden each registered double-digit scoring efforts, but it wasn't enough as the College of Charleston women's basketball team fell on the road to the Tigers of Towson University on Sunday afternoon, 71-49, at the SECU Arena.
Winning the battle in almost every major statistical category, Towson (9-13, 5-5 CAA) were paced by a 19-point showing from junior point guard Dominic Johnson. Preseason first team all-CAA selection LaTorri Hines-Allen was also effective for the hosts, notching a 12-point, 15-rebound double-double.
Playing in front of friends and family, Bolden – a native of Edgewater, Md. – was the Cougars most productive player, dropping 14 points and grabbing seven rebounds, while Hall pitched in with 11 as well. In all, 10 Cougars found the score sheet, including freshman center Zoe Wallis, who contributed some quality minutes late in the game. As a team, the Cougars claimed nine steals and fought hard on the glass, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds, but were eventually undone by another tough night offensively – shooting just 30% for the game.
Playing in front of a strong home crowd, it was all Towson from the outset as the Tigers quickly jumped out to a 9-2 lead following a lay-up from Hines-Allen. As the pace slowed and the Cougars (4-17, 2-8 CAA) settled in to the game, the maroon and white closed the home team's advantage to just three, 13-10, after a great move on the low-block by sophomore forward Courtney Gardner. The game would not stay close for long, however, as the Tigers rattled off 24 of the next 32 points to take a 19-point lead with 1:48 to go in the opening stanza. With Towson in control, baskets from freshman point guard Shanique Heard and a deep three from Hall cut the deficit to 14 at the halftime break, 23-37.
In the second half, the Tigers were again fast out of the gates, extending their lead to 20, 47-27, with 17:25 remaining. From there, Charleston would get no closer than 15 as the host's secured their ninth win of the season, moving to .500 in conference play.
Up next for The College is a Feb. 8, clash with Elon University at TD Arena, where tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. CofC leads the all-time series with the Phoenix, 14-8.
