Box Score WILMINGTON, N.C. – Despite playing with a sparse roster of eight players, the College of Charleston's losing skid came to an emphatic end Sunday in Trask Coliseum, and thanks to a huge fourth-quarter effort from senior forward Kelsey Booth, the Cougars pulled away late for the 64-53 win over the UNCW Seahawks (6-10; 1-4 vs. CAA).
UNCW played the Cougars tough through most of the first three periods. Scoring was hard to come by for both squads, but the Seahawks seemed to be getting best of the College, pushing the lead as high as nine points early in the third period.
After clawing back to within three, the game turned permanently in CofC's favor during a crucial sequence at the 6:36 mark of the fourth. Booth was fouled by UNCW's Naqaiyyah Teague, and converted the free throw to tie the game. Teague then compounded her error by provoking the officials into issuing her a technical foul. Breanna Bolden stepped to the line and sunk both free throw attempts, completing the five-point swing.
At that point, any momentum the Seahawks previously had vanished, as they failed to score a point for a full six minutes. Conversely, Booth proceeded to score 11 of the Cougars' 20 fourth-quarter points to bury the Seahawks and cruise to victory. Booth would finish the game with a season-high 18 points on 8-of-20 shooting, adding five boards.
The Cougars earned a pair of double-doubles in the win at the hands of Bolden and senior forward Jackie Luna-Castro. Bolden pulled off her fourth of the season by scoring 15 points and ten boards, while also adding four steals. Luna-Castro picked up her first double-double of the season and third of her career with 12 points and ten boards. She proved big down the clutch, as half her scoring came in the fourth quarter.
Darien Huff quietly had an important game for the College, going a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the third quarter to help the Cougars inch closer, setting up the eventual comeback. She also had a banner-day in the steals-department, pawing away a career-high four.
The Cougars limited themselves to nine turnovers for the second game in a row, forcing the Seahawks into twice that number. They also converted all ten of their free-throw attempts, which far outpaced UNCW's 2-of-6 night.
With the win, the Cougars rise to 6-10 on the season at the approximate halfway point of the year. That surpasses their win total of five from last season.
The College will have the next few days to recuperate, and will continue their road trip Friday when they head to Elon (9-7; 2-3 vs. CAA) for a 7 p.m. showdown.
