Box Score Williamsburg, Va. – With the game tied 51-51 with under nine seconds to play against the Tribe, Kelsey Booth drained a three-pointer with no time left on the shot-clock, lifting the Cougars to their seventh win of the season by a score of 55-51.
The contest went back and forth all night. CofC claimed the first half, heading to the locker-room with a 30-26 advantage. The Tribe fired back in the third to render the score tied 45-45 at the end of three, leading to a defensive stalemate for much of the fourth. W&M took the early lead in the period, but Darien Huff forced her way to the line with 1:45 to play, tying the game. From there, Luna-Castro pawed away a huge block to keep the Tribe off the board, leading to Booth's big shot. Intentional fouling led to the final score being slightly more imbalanced than it should have been.
“I can't explain why, but I had a feeling that if we could manage to go into the fourth quarter tied, we were going to win this game,” head coach Candice M. Jackson said. “It felt different than other games because we played a full three quarters and didn't have that lull we've been running up against. That made the difference.”
For the first time on the season, Breanna Bolden didn't record the start, and the move appeared to light a fire under the junior, who turned in a heroic effort in the third quarter, ending with 14 points, 14 boards and four steals. However, she was forced to exit a bit earlier than anticipated, picking up her fourth and fifth fouls in quick succession with just under three minutes to play.
With Bolden riding the pine to start the game, Dajah Logan made the most of her first collegiate start, matching a career-high 11 points and two steals, while hitting a new career-best seven boards. Luna-Castro had a terrific game in her own right, chipping in a little of everything, including nine points, eight boards, two blocks, and a career-high six assists.
“Both Bolden and Logan played out of their minds, and I'm thrilled with both their efforts on both defense and offense,” Jackson said. “Bre hasn't been accustomed to coming off the bench, but we needed a spark coming off the bench and she brought it. And for Dajah to be able to step in to that role as a freshman when we needed her was huge.”
Though William & Mary had a slightly better shooting night than the Cougars, CofC won the battle of the boards in convincing fashion (49 vs. 33), and flipped the script from their loss at Elon by getting to the line 16 times compared to the Tribe's six trips.
“We worked on certain things in practice, and I'm proud of this team for taking those lessons and applying them to the game,” Jackson said.
The Tribe falls to 12-7 overall and 3-5 against the CAA for the year with the loss. With the win, CofC moves to 2-5 in conference play. They'll come home this Sunday for a 2 p.m. showdown with the Towson Tigers (5-14; 2-6 vs. CAA).
