HOUSTON - Sophomore Alex Ellis competed well, but fell short of his goal as he finished 15th at the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier at Lakeside Country Club in Houston Monday.
Ellis, who competed in a field of 56 golfers at one of 13 sectional qualifying sites, carded rounds of 72 and 71 to finish with a 1-under 143.
Ellis finished as the fourth best amateur player in the field and missed the cut for the U.S. Open by three shots.
Ellis was one of 550 golfers to advance to the sectional qualifying level from a pool of 8,527 that were accepted to compete in local qualifiers.
"I'm very proud of Alex and the way he competed out there today," CofC head men's golf coach Mark McEntire said. "He is playing well and gaining a lot of confidence, which I think will translate into big things in the future for him and our program."
