Cougarettes Excel at Nationals
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Cougarettes, the College of Charleston dance team, thrived at the Universal Dance Association National Championship at the Walt Disney World Resort.
The squad had worked diligently to perfect two separate dances which were judged at the competition on routine difficulty, originality, musicality, formation, crowd reaction, coordination and unison. The team’s hard work towards a common goal leading up to the event instilled team chemistry and gave the team something to continue to build towards in the future of the program.
In just their second-ever appearance at this competition, the team placed seventh in their Pom routine, improving upon last season’s eighth-place finish.
Their performances were judged as some as the most difficult in the competition and their energy level ignited the crowd on hand at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
“I could not be prouder of what this team has accomplished this season,” said head coach Patrice Christian. “They are extremely dedicated to this program and it shows. The team placed among the top eight in their division in Pom, and had the hardest all-squad tricks in their division in Hip Hop. The program is on the rise, and I know this team will continue to make school history!”
The team capitalized on the competition as an opportunity to grow together as a unit and assess themselves against the best dance teams in the country while representing the College.
“This season has been one of our best in terms of teamwork,” said Remy Starker, a team captain. “We have a smaller team so the 12 of us have gotten extremely close and done everything for and with each other. I can’t imagine a better group of girls to have shared this experience with. We also owe so much to our coach and would never have as much success without her.
“We gain so much experience when we go to Nationals and we get to see what else is out there in college dance. Representing the College of Charleston is an honor we take seriously and we strive to be the best representatives we can be.”
The Cougarettes will continue to perform at all home CofC men’s and women’s basketball games and always appreciate the support of the Cougar Nation as they strive for new horizons in upcoming performances and competitions.
“I am incredibly proud of my teammates and all we have accomplished thus far,” said Ariel Imler, a senior and team captain. “This national team consisted of seven new dancers, who have shown great commitment and loyalty to our team.
“We would also like to thank the College of Charleston and all our Cougar fans for their support. The attendance at our open practices and show night demonstrated how unified this school is, and we could not be more grateful. We are still working on new material so make sure to see us perform at all home women’s and men’s basketball games!”
