CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston sailing team competed at two regattas this weekend as they finished third at the Truxton Umsted hosted by Navy and finished seventh at the St. Mary's Women's Regatta.
The Cougars improved on their finishes from last year as they came in ninth at the Truxtun Umsted and 12th at the St. Mary's Women's Regatta in the 2012 season.
"We had high hopes coming into these regattas and I think it was a pretty good weekend for us," CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. To get third-place at the Truxtun with some really good teams there is a great result. I think things are coming together well for us and hopefully we will be peaking at the right time."
CofC sailed senior All-American skipper Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) along with sophomore crew Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) and freshman crew Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) in A-Division, while senior Chris Banholzer (Hartland, Wis.) skippers B-Division with the crew of sophomore Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.) and senior Jeff Aschieris (Newport Beach, Calif.).
Junior Enrique Arathoon (Guatemala City, Guatemala), who is a 2016 Olympic Games hopeful next to his fellow countryman and teammate Juan Maegli, will made his CofC collegiate debut in C-Division of the Truxtun Umstead, while junior Roy Shaw (Bacliff, Texas) raced in D-Division.
The team the competed at the St. Mary's Women's regatta was sophomore skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and junior crew Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.) In A-Division, while sophomore skipper Kayla Gibson (Houston, Texas) was joined by senior crew Sarah Scudder (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and freshman crew Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) in B-Division.
Up next the Cougars travel to Norfolk, Va. March 23-24 for the Aaron Szambecki Team Race, hosted by Old Dominion.
