BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford closed out its three-game weekend softball series with College of Charleston with a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon at the Birmingham-Southern College Softball Field.
The Bulldogs (11-22, 3-9 SoCon) snapped a seven-game losing skid, but the Cougars (19-16, 8-6 SoCon) still won the league series with 3-2 and 4-2 victories on Saturday.
The Samford offense went to work early in the first two innings of the contest bringing in three runs on three hits courtesy of an RBI single from shortstop Abby Adams that brought in leftfielder Megan Dowdy for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
CofC had to go to its bullpen in the bottom of the second as the Bulldogs advanced two base runners on a hit by pitch and left field double. Both would later score off a wild pitch and on the throw to go up 3-0.
Sophomore Hope Klicker (Walla Walla, Wash.) was relieved by freshman right-hander Valerie Cassell (Edison, N.J.), who got the Cougars out of the inning and later faced 16 batters with four strikeouts and allowing just one hit and no runs over the final five innings.
“Samford did what they needed to do to win the game today,” CofC Head Coach Shelly Hoerner said. “We have to have better at-bats and be more in control of our play. We will make those adjustments this week in practice and be prepared for our next contests.”
With two outs in the top of third, junior centerfielder Carly Corthell (Reno, Nev.) got on base and later scored on an RBI single sent into left field by senior second baseman Ashton Jarrett (Hanahan, S.C.) for CofC’s lone run of the game.
Samford’s Shelby Scott was credited with the win in the circle, while Caitlin Bice earned the save.
CofC will next travel for a mid-week, non-conference doubleheader at North Carolina Central on Wednesday, April 10 at 2 p.m. (ET) in Raleigh, N.C.
