GREENVILLE, N.C. – The College of Charleston men’s tennis team dropped its second 4-3 match in a row this afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Center in Greenville, N.C.

The loss drops the Cougars’ overall record to 10-8, while they remain 5-3 in the SoCon. With the win, East Carolina moves to 15-3 with an 11-1 mark at home.

The Pirates started off strong by winning two of the three doubles. However, the Cougar duo of sophomore Charlie Ghriskey (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) and junior Brice Allanic (Colombes, France) led their match 7-6 on Court 1 when time was called.

Singles was a long affair as all but one of the matches went to three sets. Sophomore Sebastian Lopez (Medellin, Colombia) and freshman Zack Lewis (Richmond, Ky.) both pulled off three-set comebacks.

Lopez dropped his first set 2-6 before responding with 6-3 and 6-1 set victories to beat Nicolas Soriano of East Carolina at the No. 2 line.

Lewis lost his first set 3-6 but came back with 6-1 and 7-5 wins to claim a victory over Mario Martinez at No. 5.

Senior Billy Kenny (Pawley’s Island, S.C.) rounded things out for CofC when he warded off a comeback from Colin Roller of the Pirates to win 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 on Court 6.

“The Pirates deserve a lot of credit for their win today,” CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said. “On the bright side, we fought well in singles and had good energy in doubles with some new combinations. However, we didn’t finish our first sets well, which probably shifted the momentum in ECU’s favor. We managed to claw back into the match and we had an opportunity to take the win but we couldn’t quite capitalize on it. We’re going to need to train hard these next three days to be ready to close out the season.”

The team will come back to Charleston and have three days of practice before resuming Southern Conference play against Wofford on Thursday, April 11 at 2:30 p.m. (ET) at Patriots Point.
