The Cougars come into the series in second place in the league standings and could overtake first-place Appalachian State (29-18, 16-5 SoCon) given a Cougar sweep of UNCG and the Mountaineers being swept in their weekend series at third-place Georgia Southern (26-26, 12-8 SoCon).

The Cougars dropped their final game against Western Carolina last weekend which snapped a 13-game win streak and rounded out a 17-2 record in the month of April.

Despite Sunday’s hiccup in the Western Carolina series finale, the Cougars have been red hot as of late in all phases in the game, resulting in CofC being the only team in the league ranked in the top three statistically in hitting, pitching and fielding.

Over the win streak, every single player who received at least one at-bat was batting over .300 with the team hitting .338 collectively, while the pitching staff managed a 0.78 ERA with opponents batting just .184.

Now on the season, the team is batting .282 together after seeing that number rise from .252 at the end of March.

Kelsey Hodgson (Woodstock, Ga.) leads the club with a .341 batting average and 41 RBIs – the third most in the league. The junior’s on-base percentage plus slugging percentage (OPS) is a healthy 1.190 as the slugger has 26 extra-base hits and 14 homers on the season. She is three long balls away from CofC’s all-time record held by Amanda Cone (2001-04).

Hodgson is joined by three other players hitting over .300 on the year, Chandler Frisbie (Woodstock, Ga.) (.329), Allison Pedigo (Scottsville, Ky.) (.321) and Mackenzie Maples (Corona, Calif.) (.314).

Maples has been one of the most productive hitters as of late and hit .423 (22-for-52) last month. The sophomore also went on a late-season tear last season which landed her the second best batting average on the team in 2012.

Senior pitcher Stephanie Saylors (Easley, S.C.) has also been dominant in the circle and has earned a win in each of her last nine outings, posting a 0.80 ERA and striking out 30 compared to seven walks over that span.

The pitching staff now combines for a 2.82 ERA on the year while the Cougar bats are earning over a full run-per-game higher, on average. The pitchers have struck out more than three times as many hitters as they have walked.

Freshman Rebecca Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif.) brings a 14-game reaching-base streak with her into the series.

UNCG has sputtered a bit recently with just one win in their last six games, all of which were SoCon contests. The lone win came in last weekend’s series against Georgia Southern, preventing them from being swept in their last two series.

The Spartans’ .303 batting average this season is the best in the league and they have hit 31 home runs, identical to the Cougars.

Junior Katelyn Bedwell  leads the team with a .391 average on 61 hits, seven doubles, 10 home runs and a team-high 49 RBIs, which is the third highest total in UNCG history.

Freshman Lindsay Thomas is second at .381, and fellow freshman Allison Geiner is third with a .354 average.

Redshirt junior Raeanne Hanks leads the pitching staff with a 17-8 record with a 2.65 ERA and 147 strikeouts. Hanks leads the team with 14 complete games and two shutouts in 156 innings of work.

For the pitchers, freshman Nicole Thomas has a 5-1 record with a 2.92 ERA and 26 strikeouts. Classmate Kelly Lupton is 4-1 with two saves and is second on the team with 48 strikeouts. Sophomore Erica Navarette has thrown the bulk of the Spartans’ innings and is 8-6 on the season with a save and 55 strikeouts.
