CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman Josh Lorenzetti and junior Alex Ellis will represent the College of Charleston men’s golf team as they will compete as individuals at the NCAA Men’s Golf Regional Championship May 16-18 in Baton Rouge, La., at the University Club.

Lorenzetti earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals by virtue of winning medalist honors at the 2013 Southern Conference Men’s Championship. Lorenzetti, the first freshman in CofC men’s golf history to win a conference championship, was the only player to shoot under-par in the SoCon Championship.

Ellis, who earned All-Conference honors and finished eighth at the SoCon Championship recorded four top-10 finishes on the season to receive an at-large bid as an individual in the NCAA Regional field.

Ellis will tee off tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. and will be paired with Jeffrey Merrell from Houston Baptist and Josh Waters from LIU Brooklyn. Lorenzetti will be in the following group at 10:10 a.m. with Hudson Hansard from Houston Baptist and Tomasz Anderson from Jacksonville State.

With Lorenzetti and Ellis set to compete in the NCAA Regional, it marks the first time since 2003 that the men’s golf team has been represented in postseason competition. It is also the first time the Cougars have had two individuals qualify for postseason play.

Six 54-hole regional tournaments will be conducted May 16-18. Thirteen teams and ten individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.

The finals will be conducted May 28-June 2, at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Georgia. Georgia Institute of Technology is the host institution for this year’s championships.

“I am very happy for Alex and Josh,” CofC head coach Mark McEntire said. “Qualifying for post season shows that they are doing the right things and the program is headed in the same direction. This will be a new experience for us this week because we will be playing as individuals and not as a team. We will have to play more aggressive and not worry about other guys picking up the slack. Both Josh and Alex have had a great year and it would not surprise me if one of them made it through to the NCAA Championship.”
