SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The College of Charleston had 163 student-athletes earn a spot on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2012-13 academic year, as the league office announced its complete school-by-school list of honorees on Thursday.
The honor roll topped 2,000 student-athletes (2,023) for the first time in conference history, surpassing the record 1,985, who were honored in 2010-11. The 25-year-old award originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the honor roll prior as a way to recognize the league’s outstanding student-athletes.
The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade-point average or higher, while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
Of those more than 2,000 student-athletes on the list, 895 earned the Commissioner’s Medal, awarded annually to student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout the school year. Of those, 86 had perfect 4.0 GPAs including CofC’s Canyon Barry (Colorado Springs, Colo.) of men’s basketball in physics, Christian Bailey (Charlotte, N.C.) of men’s cross country in international business, Chloe Fletcher (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) of softball, Jordan Trgovac (Green Bay, Wis.) of softball, Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) of women’s tennis in exercise science and mathematics and Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) of women’s tennis in communication.
The honor roll includes all 19 SoCon-sponsored sports as well as the non-sponsored sports of field hockey, lacrosse, swimming and diving, equestrian, rifle and sailing. League schools who sponsor swimming are members of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA).
