CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston’s Kari Fidelholtz etched her name in the CofC record books with a nine-ace performance on Saturday, leading Charleston (6-0) to a 3-0 sweep over S.C. State (0-5) in the Hampton Inn CofC Invitational.
Fidelholtz served three aces in each set to finish with nine, a mark that tied Mary Sabatino’s nine aces in 2000 against Christian Brothers.
As a team, Charleston finished with 14 aces as a team with Sloane White adding three and Catey Warren and Kallie McKown each landing a perfect serve. CofC hit .333 as a team, while S.C. State was limited to an .041 mark with 15 hitting errors.
The Cougars started the team’s reserves for the whole match and freshman Maddie Hills set a new season high with a team-best 11 kills and a .526 hitting percentage. Catey Warren finished with six kills and seven digs and sophomore Grace Rebarchak had five kills. Junior right-side Sloane White did get the start and tallied eight kills.
Desire Waller led the Bulldogs with six kills and four digs, but committed eight reception errors.
Charleston finished each set with strong runs, opening leads of 17-8 and 20-10 in the first two sets, while going on an 8-0 run to break open a 16-12 margin in the final set.
CofC will face off against undefeated Indiana tonight at 7 p.m. for the championship title of the Hampton Inn CofC Invitational.
