The College of Charleston volleyball team has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2008 signing period. The athletes include Elyse Chubb, a 6’0” middle hitter from Atlanta, Ga., Sarah Havel, a 6’2” middle hitter from Carmel Ind., and Emily Shelton, a 5’8” libero from Cincinatti, Ohio.

“I am very excited about all 3 of these recruits. Each has the ability to have a huge impact on next year’s team,” said head coach Jason Kepner.

Chubb, a PrepVolleyball.com Senior Ace, was a member of the Tsunami volleyball club and helped lead the McInton High School volleyball team to the 2007 Georgia 4A State Championship. She was an All-Area selection in 2006 and 2007 and was named to the 2007 All-State team. While at McIntosh High School, Chubb earned offensive player of the year honors in 2007 after being named the defensive player of the year in 2006. She also was All-Area in basketball in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007. Chubb, an honor roll student since 2005, is the daughter of Bree and Ron Chubb.

“Elyse is a very quick and explosive middle,” continued Kepner. “She is coming off leading her team to a state championship, which means she knows what it takes to win.”

Havel, the 2007 Carmel High School MVP and three year honor roll student, was a 2007 All-State and All-Conference selection. She was also named to the Indiana All-State team and was a member of the Team Indiana Volleyball Club. Havel is the daughter of Melissa and John Havel.

“Sarah gives us height in the middle and plays for one of the top HS teams in Indiana. She has received great coaching and is a very skilled 6'2" player,” said Kepner. “They will both bring experience from having played High School and Club at a high level.”

Shelton, who earned first honors in academics, was a member of the St. Ursula Academy volleyball team and the 2007 National Championship winning Team Z Volleyball Club. She was an All-State selection in 2005 and 2007 and was named to the 2007 All-District and All-City First Teams. She was also a Cincinnatii Enquirer First Team selection in 2006 and 2007 and was a 2006 and 2007 First Team All-GGCL member. Shelton was a 2007 All-America team member, a five-time open qualifier, and a three-time regional championship winner while competing with the Team Z Volleyball Club. Shelton is the daughter of Marianne and James Shelton.

“Emily is one of the best libero's in the country. She plays on the top club team in the country and is coming off winning the National Championship this past season,” Kepner said. “That experience will definitely benefit her when she arrives in Charleston. She will help our passing and ball control from day one.”

The College of Charleston finished its 2007 season with a 26-8 record that included a 16-2 mark in Southern Conference play. The team also made its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance after winning the 2007 SoCon Tournament.
