MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team claimed their second win over a nationally-ranked opponent this season with a 6-1 victory over No. 72 Wisconsin on Friday afternoon at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (6-5) previously beat No. 70 North Florida, 4-2, on Feb. 25. They swept the doubles point for the third-consecutive match as senior Emma Hayman (Wanganui, New Zealand) and sophomore Irene Viana (Paris, France) defeated Wisconsin's top duo of Jenny Hois and Alaina Trgovich, 8-5, at the No. 1 line to go into singles play with the 1-0 momentum over the Badgers (8-4).

Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets including a 6-3, 6-2 win by junior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) over Hannah Berner for the match clincher at No. 3. Newman is one of three Cougars currently on a three-match winning streak next to senior Keely Mulligan (Miami, Fla.), who got past Aleksandra Markovic, 7-6, 6-0, at No. 5, and junior Katie Lee (Brisbane, Australia), who won two love-sets over Caroline Bauer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6.

"We took advantage of the beautiful Lowcountry weather today and benefited from the 83 degree temperature," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "I was hoping to start our six-match stretch with a good performance and defeating a strong Big Ten opponent, who were ranked No. 54 last week, is just what we needed. We would like to thank the CofC women's soccer team for their support to help us pull ahead in the singles."

CofC will take on its second-straight opponent in a tough six-match stretch in East Carolina (12-3) on Saturday, March 19. Live scoring of the match is available on www.CofCSports.com or by CLICKING HERE.

"East Carolina comes into town as part of USTA Campus Kids Day," Anastopoulo said. "They know our team very well and will be another tough match. They are extremely talented in doubles."
