CHARLESTON, S.C. - The third-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team won the North Points #3 regatta by a convincing 12-point margin over the spring break holiday in Knoxville, Tenn.
It marked the Cougars' fourth North Points victory of the season with two in the fall and two in the spring. They defeated in-district teams from Clemson, Georgia Tech, The Citadel, host Tennessee, UNC Wilmington, NC State and Auburn with 17 first-place points. The Tigers were their nearest competitors with 29 second-place points.
Freshman skipper Iván Aponte-Taboas (Humacao, Puerto Rico) led CofC to victory in A-Division with first-place finishes in five of six races for seven points with freshman crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.), while freshman skipper Chris Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) and freshman crew Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.) placed first in two of six races for 10 first-place points in B-Division.
The second-ranked CofC women finished third at the Navy Spring Women's Invitational hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy on the Severn River in Annapolis, Md.
Senior Corey Hall (St. Petersburg, Fla.) skippered A-Division to a fourth-place finish with senior All-American crew Alyssa Aitken (Sandwich, Mass.) in races 1-16 and sophomore Carly Shevitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) in races 17-20. In B-Division, sophomore Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) also skippered the Cougars to a fourth-place finish with junior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.).
CofC will next compete at North Points #4 hosted by Georgia Tech on March 17 in Atlanta, Ga., the Truxton Umsted hosted by Navy on March 17-18 in Annapolis, Md., the St. Mary's Women's Invitational hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland on March 17-18 in St. Mary's City, Md., and the Mendelblatt Team Race hosted by USF and Eckerd College on March 17-18 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
