CHARLESTON, S.C. - The 2012 Southern Conference Men's and Women's Tennis Championships, co-hosted by the College of Charleston and The Citadel, will get underway on Thursday, April 19, with first-round matches beginning at 9 a.m. (ET) at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point and the O. Perry Earle, Jr. Tennis Center.

Admission is free to the public for all four days of the tournament. The first round on Thursday and quarterfinals on Friday, April 20, will be hosted at both campus sites, while the semifinals on Saturday, April 21, and finals on Sunday, April 22, will be played at the CofC Tennis Center. Tournament scoring will be in play with the first team to four points advancing to the next round.

The winner of the SoCon Tennis Championships will receive the league's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships which begin in the second weekend of May.

The CofC men (15-4) head into the postseason tournament as the No. 1 seed under fifth-year head coach Jay Bruner, who was recently named 2012 SoCon Men's Tennis Coach of the Year. The Cougars claimed a share of their third consecutive conference regular-season championship title with a 9-1 mark, but held the tiebreaker over No. 2 seed Samford.

CofC last advanced to its first and only NCAA Tournament appearance as the No. 1 seed in 2003 - a 4-1 win over former league member East Tennessee State at the Earle Tennis Center. The Cougars have been SoCon Tournament runner-ups in 2007 and 2011.

The all-conference first team combination of senior Mickael Trintignac (Le Cannet, France) and junior Kyle Parker (Richmond, Va.) are currently the only ranked team out of the SoCon with an impressive 17-2 record at No. 1 doubles. The Cougar tandem are ranked No. 66 in the country in the latest Campbell's/ITA Collegiate Tennis Doubles Rankings released on April 17 - the first CofC duo to make an appearance in the national rankings since Sagi Zakin and Henrico DuPlessis in 2002.

The CofC men earned a first-round tournament bye and will face the winner of either No. 8-seeded Chattanooga or No. 9-seeded Davidson in quarterfinal action to be held on Friday, April 20 at 8:30 a.m. (ET) at the CofC Tennis Center.

On the women's side, CofC (22-5) will look to defend its tournament title under 21st-year head coach and Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo, having won the last three consecutive years and represented the SoCon in the NCAA Tournament.

The Cougars are the No. 2 seed in this year's tournament field and are currently the only league school ranked in the latest Campbell's/ITA Collegiate Tennis Team Rankings at No. 65 out of 311 NCAA Division I teams. They were previously ranked a program-best No. 60 on March 27.

All six players in the team's strong singles lineup have 14 wins or more this season and four of the six were recently honored on the All-SoCon first or second team including No. 1 player Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), No. 2 player Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.), No. 4 player Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) and No. 5 player Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.). CofC has won 18 of its last 19 regular-season matches leading into the postseason tourney.

The CofC women also earned a first-round bye and will take on the winner of No. 7 Elon and No. 10 Wofford in the quarterfinals to be played on Friday, April 20 at 1 p.m. (ET) at the Earle Tennis Center on the campus of The Citadel.

Live scoring for all of the tournament matches as well as a video highlight package and photo gallery slideshow at the conclusion of each day of play will be available at the SoCon Tennis Championships website at: http://www.soconsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=4000&ATCLID=205247733
