Cougars Complete Day Of Pool Play, Set Seeds For Pairs Championship

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The College of Charleston opened with first day of the inaugural AVCA National Championships by competing in pairs pool play against the best individual pairs in the country.

Junior duo Emily Shelton and Kelly Kolich finished tied for second in their pool with a 1-2 record on the day. The Cougars' number two pair swept Long Beach State's number two pair by a score of 21-16, 21-10. However, CofC lost to Florida State's top pair (21-13, 21-10) and to Hawaii's top pair (21-13, 21-17).

Although the Cougars finished tied for second with a 1-2 record, the point tiebreaker put CofC in fourth place in the pool and put Kolich/Shelton in the 13th seed for Sunday's single-elimination tournament.

In pool C, College of Charleston's Elyse Chubb and Lizzie Theesfeld faced a tough draw against Long Beach State, Pepperdine and Stetson. The Cougars lost to the top pair in the pool, the Long Beach State one team by a score of 21-9, 21-15. Pepperdine's twos scored a 21-13, 21-14 win over Chubb/Theesfeld, and the top Stetson pair finished the day with a 21-13, 21-17 win over the CofC ones.

As a result of Friday's play, Chubb and Theesfeld earned the 15th seed in Sunday's tournament.

The Cougars entire squad will take to the sand tomorrow at 11 a.m. to open the team tournament against top-seeded Pepperdine. The team portion will feature double-elimination play with a championship dual scheduled for 5 p.m.
