AUSTIN, TEXAS - Sophomore Alex Ellis is one step closer to qualifying for the 112th U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco as he made it past local qualifying.
Ellis, a native of Austin played in his hometown at the Grey Rock Golf Club on Tuesday and earned medalist honors as he carded a round of 67.
Ellis is one of 550 golfers to advance to the sectional qualifying level from a pool of 8,527 that were accepted to compete in local qualifiers.
"It will be great to have some CofC representation at the sectional qualifying of the U.S. Open," Head Coach Mark McEntire said. "I am proud of Alex and believe he is capable of making it through."
Ellis finished ahead of many elite golfers including David Gossett, who has won on the PGA Tour.
Ellis will now travel to one of 13 sites for sectional qualifying in either Houston or Memphis June 4, where he will play 36 holes for the chance at a spot in the U.S. Open June 11-17.
