SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The College of Charleston had 15 student-athletes honored on the 2012 Southern Conference Spring Academic All-Conference Team released by the league office on Thursday.
The five-time SoCon champion CofC women's tennis team had three of its own represented on the list in senior Caroline Newman (Greensboro, N.C.), junior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.). All three are members of the CofC Honors College and tied for the highest grade-point average of all spring honorees with a perfect 4.0 in psychology, physical education and communication respectively.
Eleven of the 15 Cougars recognized on the academic all-conference team held a 3.5 GPA or better including senior men's tennis player and 2012 NCAA Doubles Championship qualifier Mickael Trintignac (Le Cannet, France) with a 3.72 in business administration, senior high jump specialist and 2012 NCAA Track & Field East Preliminary Regional qualifier Emily Smith (Rock Hill, S.C.) with a 3.65 in business administration and junior right-handed pitcher and 2012 NCAA Gainesville Regional All-Tournament Team member Matt Pegler (Greenville, S.C.) with a 3.62 in business administration.
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
