MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team moved on to the finals of three singles and two doubles flights on the second day of tournament play at the College of Charleston Invitational held at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
Senior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) led the way for the Cougars with a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set decision over Aleksandra Filipovski of defending NCAA Division II national champion Armstrong Atlantic State in the top singles flight. She will face Barbara Krtickova of AASU tomorrow in the finals.
Sophomore Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) advanced in both singles and doubles action with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jessica Gardefjord of AASU in the A2 singles flight and paired with junior Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) in the A2 doubles flight. The duo defeated Jen Miller and Clarke Tatje of Stetson, 8-3, in the quarterfinals, and Tyler Baker and Natsuko Takayanagi of UNC Charlotte, 8-2, in the semifinals for a spot in tomorrow's title match.
Sophomore Grace Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) improved her fall tournament record to 2-0 holding her opponent, Ginny Johnson of UNC Charlotte, to two love sets to move on to tomorrow's finals in the B2 singles flight against MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell of Stetson.
In A1 doubles action, freshman Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) and senior Irene Viana (Paris, France) advanced to the finals with an 8-5 win over Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius of UNC Charlotte in the opening round and an 8-3 rout of Diana Bukajeva and Andrea Crespo of Stetson in the semis.
"We were very pleased with our results today as we will compete for five out of the eight flight championships," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "All of the student-athletes playing in the tournament should be very proud of themselves. They have competed well and maintained great sportsmanship throughout the weekend. We are looking forward to a great final day of the tournament tomorrow."
Tournament play continues tomorrow beginning with doubles at 8:30 a.m. (ET).
