CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Three College of Charleston men's tennis newcomers claimed singles flight titles on the final day of tournament play at the 49ers Pick'Em Invitational held on Sunday at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
Sophomore Charlie Ghriskey (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), a transfer from William & Mary, freshman Zack Lewis (Richmond, Ky.) and freshman Josh Record (Tallahassee, Fla.) compiled an undefeated 3-0 record for the tournament with wins over opponents hailing from host UNC Charlotte, Gardner-Webb and Winthrop in their CofC debuts.
Ghriskey was the Flight 4 champion with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Michael Chen of Winthrop, Lewis the Flight 7 champion with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Krzysztof Kwasniewicz of UNCC and Record the Flight 8 champion with a 6-1, 6-0 win over J.D. O'Brien of Winthrop.
Day three of the invitational was hampered by inclement weather and the majority of the matches were not played including all of doubles.
Senior Billy Kenny (Pawley's Island, S.C.) was able to finish out his match in Flight 5 singles and defeated Steven Patrick of Winthrop in three sets, 0-6, 6-1, 7-5, while sophomore Alon Faiman (Ramat Hasharon, Israel) beat Chase Altieri of Winthrop, 6-0, 6-1, in Flight 6 singles.
The Cougars will return to action on Oct. 5-7 as they travel to the UVA Classic hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
