CHARLESTON, S.C. - College of Charleston women's tennis players Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and Grace Baker (Charlotte, N.C.) will compete individually at the Wake Forest Invitational to be held on Oct. 5-7 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Along with the Cougars and host Demon Deacons, 14 other teams make up this year's singles and doubles tournament field including Richmond, UNC Charlotte, Campbell, Louisville, Navy, Radford, West Virginia, Winthrop, Stetson and East Tennessee State as well as Southern Conference foes UNCG, Appalachian State, Elon and Davidson.
Reflecting on the last couple weeks of practice in preparation for the tournament, CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo stated that, "Everyone's been working really hard and it will be nice to get back into competition. We'll send Christin Newman and Grace Baker, who both won their individual flights at the CofC Invitational three weeks ago. We're anxious to continue the success we experienced at our home tournament into the competitive field at Wake Forest this weekend."
Newman will play in the top singles flight, while Baker will be in the fourth of nine singles flights. Both will also combine in doubles at the tournament.
When asked about Baker's progress, Anastopoulo said, "I'm really proud of Grace and the improvement she's made over the summer. She's really going to be a force to be reckoned with in SoCon play and she's going to challenge some of our returners for a starting spot in the lineup."
