Cougars Fall To Eventual Champions At ITA Regionals
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team was represented by two players at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regionals at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Senior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) won her match in the Round of 64, before falling in straight sets to Esther Goldfeld from Duke, who won the doubles title with teammate Hanna Mar. Freshman Brooke McAmis, also from Greensboro, faced Mar in the Round of 32 and lost a tough 6-4, 6-2 decision to the eventual singles champion.
“It was a very good tournament for us,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “Christin and Brooke lost to Duke’s No. 2 and 3 players, who advanced to the Final Four at the national championship last year. Brooke played a great first set against Hanna (Mar) and was in position to win the match. We learned a lot about where we need to improve for our spring competition and to be competitive in the Southern Conference.”
The Cougars conclude fall tournament play as their previously scheduled Halloween tournament this weekend has been cancelled due to the impending bad weather conditions.
