CHARLESTON, S.C. – The four-time defending Southern Conference champion College of Charleston women’s tennis team has announced its 2013 spring schedule.
Non-conference home matches against Kansas, out of the Big 12 Conference on Feb. 16, NC State out of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Feb. 17, and Penn State out of the Big Ten Conference on March 9, will give CofC an opportunity to showcase its talent versus top-ranked BCS schools. In fact, six opponents on this year’s schedule were ranked in the final 2011-12 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 75 team rankings including No. 3 Duke, No. 31 South Carolina, No. 51 Penn State, No. 61 Wyoming, No. 62 Wichita State and No. 74 Wisconsin. CofC finished No. 63 nationally after being ranked as high as No. 60, which marked a program best.
“We are excited about our 2013 schedule, opening up with a very good Winthrop team that has won the Big South ConferenceChampionship several years in a row,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “We’ll return back to Duke for our fourth consecutive ITA Kick-Off Weekend which is the regional qualifier for the ITA National Indoor Championship. Only the top 60 teams in the country get a chance to play in the event, so we’re proud to represent the Southern Conference. We will be the No. 3 seed and play a very good Wyoming team indoors at Duke, which will be a real challenge. We are also fortunate to be hosting a lot of home matches again, because teams use Charleston as a destination for their spring breaks and we’re pleased to have them here and show them some Southern hospitality.”
The Cougars will kick off their spring slate with a dual match versus Winthrop on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. (ET) at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
