CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s tennis team will look to defend its Southern Conference title with yet another challenging 2013 spring slate as announced by head coach Jay Bruner on Monday.

The Cougars, who earned an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament field of 64, will host eight home matches this season and face two non-conference opponents who finished among the top 75 teams in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Team Rankings last year in No. 45 Virginia Tech and No. 71 Louisiana-Lafayette.

The schedule is also highlighted by a spring break to New Orleans, La., to take on Tulane, in preparation for league play. Six opponents will also be new, having not played them in 2012.

“We are excited about the level of this year’s schedule,” Bruner said. “Our spring break trip to New Orleans to play Tulane will be the first time we have ever traveled to New Orleans and we’re excited about a great match with the Green Wave. Being our last year in the Southern Conference, each of our league matches will be exciting. We also have a great non-conference schedule which will allow us to play some strong teams on the road. This will be a good test for our young team seeing that we only have two upperclassmen on our roster this year.”

The season will kick off at Bruner’s alma mater Virginia Tech on Jan. 19. The Cougars will then host Winthrop in their home opener on Feb. 1 at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point before they embark on a seven-game road stretch consisting of Presbyterian on Feb. 9, UNC Charlotte on Feb. 10, Mercer on Feb. 22, Georgia State on Feb. 23, Chattanooga on March 2, Samford on March 3 and Tulane on March 6.

CofC will continue SoCon play with a home dual match against Davidson on March 10, a road match at Furman on March 14, and another home match versus Appalachian State on March 16.

The team will step out of conference to take on UMBC at home on March 21, before hosting Wofford on March 23 and traveling to Georgia Southern on March 26.

The Cougars will then have a two-match home stand with Louisiana-Lafayette on March 27 and cross-town rival The Citadel on April 3.

CofC will close out the regular season with road matches at Elon on April 6 and East Carolina on April 7 before returning home to play UNCG on Senior Day on April 12.

The 2013 Southern Conference Tennis Championships will be held on April 18-21 and hosted by Elon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and Burlington Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.
