CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team earned a program-best preseason national ranking of No. 63 in the NCAA Women's Division I National Team Rankings released this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Last season, the Cougars made their fifth all-time NCAA Tournament appearance, won the Southern Conference title for the fourth-straight year and were ranked as high as No. 60 in the country - the highest national ranking in program history. They also turned in their first 25-win campaign with a 25-6 overall record.
"It is nice to start the season off being recognized in the preseason rankings," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "However, our full attention is preparing for the five-time defending Big South Conference champion Winthrop Eagles in a January 19 showdown in our home opener.
"Our team will be challenged in each match we play this season. We are playing teams from every power conference in the country with the exception of the Pac-12. This is by far the most challenging schedule in my 22 years of coaching."
The Cougars will open the spring season against Winthrop on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. (ET) at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. They will also face Kansas (Big 12), NC State (ACC), South Carolina (SEC), Penn State (Big Ten) and South Florida (BIG EAST).
