LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 3-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team tied its highest-finish in the last five years at the 28th annual Rose Bowl regatta held over the weekend at the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club near the Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in the Long Beach outer harbor.

The Cougars fell short of the title with 85 second-place points as No. 7-ranked Stanford used a come-from-behind victory to bring home the roses with 67 points. CofC led after the first day of racing on Saturday, but the Cardinal would make up the 13-point difference in Sunday's four races with finishes of 11th, second, third and first among the 30-team college Gold fleet crews at the event hosted by the University of Southern California and the US Sailing Center.

In previous years, the Cougars placed fifth in 2012, fourth in 2011, second in 2010 and fourth in 2009. Even despite the second-place finish, they still beat out defending Rose Bowl champion and No. 4-ranked Boston College in third (107 points), top-ranked Georgetown (111 points) in fourth and Fordham (115 points) in fifth among the top finishing schools at the regatta.

Like Stanford, all of CofC's crew were Southern California products. Freshman Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) skippered the Cougars to a second-place finish in A-Division with freshman crew Katie Dowling (Coronado, Calif.) with 45 points, while CofC used alternating skippers in the B-Division races with freshmen Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Jack Jorgensen (La Canada, Calif.) along with freshman crew Kyle Sutter (San Diego, Calif.). The trio turned in a third-place result of 39 points behind Stanford and Old Dominion.

CofC will next travel to the SAISA Open hosted by Eckerd College for its spring season opener on Feb. 9-10 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
