CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No. 63-ranked College of Charleston women’s tennis team will host Winthrop in its spring season opener on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 1 p.m. (ET) at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
The Cougars (0-0) return to play after a two-month hiatus following the ITA Carolina Regional Championships, where they were represented by two Greensboro, N.C., natives in senior Christin Newman and freshman Brooke McAmis. CofC enters the spring with its highest-ever preseason ITA national ranking.
“Winthrop will be a great challenge to start off the season,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “Playing such a talented team means we won’t be able to ease into the season – this should be a very competitive match on Saturday. Winthrop is the five-time defending Big South Conference champion and we can always expect a hard-fought match with Coach (Cid) Carvalho’s teams.”
Winthrop (1-0) embarks on an eight-match road trip after a dominating 7-0 season-opening win over fellow Southern Conference foe Wofford on Jan. 13. When CofC played Winthrop last January, the Cougars were able to come away with a 4-2 victory in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend consolation match play on the campus of Duke University in Durham, N.C.
