Ortiz helped lead the Cougars to their second straight meet victory, knocking off conference rival Gardner-Webb, 176-171. Ortiz won the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.21; he won the 100 butterfly in 57.76 and came in second place in the 400 meter IM (4:41.31). Ortiz also swam a leg of the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay, both of which came in second place.
A physical education major, Newman helped spur the Cougars to a season-opening victory over defending Big South champion Winthrop. Newman defeated No. 95-ranked Yasmine Alkema in the No. 1 singles by a thrilling score of 6-7, 7-6, 10-5. She also helped the Cougars capture the doubles point with a come-from-behind 8-6 victory.
