CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The College of Charleston men’s tennis team fell just short in a close-fought 4-3 loss to Chattanooga this evening at the UTC Tennis Center.

This marked the opening of Southern Conference play for the College and was the first stop for the Cougars on their three-match spring break trip. The win drops CofC’s record to 2-4 while the Mocs climb to 6-3.

Doubles was a tightly contested affair as junior Brice Allanic (Colombes, France) and his partner sophomore Sebastian Lopez (Medellin, Colombia) won their match over Chris Smith and Roberto Vieira of the Mocs by a score of 8-5 in the No. 1 position.

Unfortunately for CofC, the other two Cougar duos fell by scores of 8-6 and 9-7 which clinched the doubles point for Chattanooga.

The College clawed back in singles when sophomore Alon Faiman (Ramat Hasharon, Israel) topped Chattanooga’s Jackson Tresnan 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 5 slot.

Freshman Charlie Ghriskey (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) earned CofC a 2-1 lead when he knocked off Pavels Grigorjevs of the Mocs 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) in the No. 4 spot.

Lopez and junior Crescente Lesser (Santiago, Chile) came up short in the No. 2 and No. 3 positions which meant that the match came down to No. 1 singles between CofC’s Allanic and Chattanooga’s Vieira. Vieira avenged his doubles loss to Allanic by winning an incredibly close 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) battle to clinch the win for the Mocs.

“This match gave us a sense of what we need to improve,” CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said. “We are learning about ourselves each match and giving ourselves opportunities to win.”

The Cougars will not have time to lick their wounds before facing last year’s SoCon runner-up in Samford (4-4) tomorrow, March 3. First serve at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavillion is set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Homewood, Ala.
