JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida Ospreys overcame the No. 61-ranked College of Charleston women’s tennis team 5-2 this afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.

The loss drops the Cougars to 5-4 while the Ospreys improve to 6-3. This was the second of two matches that CofC played in Florida for its spring break trip, the first being a 4-3 win over Stetson on Saturday, March 2.

Doubles started off on a positive note for the College when the sophomore duo of Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) and Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) won their match over Marina Cunningham and Mariella Calderon 8-3 in the No. 3 slot.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, North Florida won the other two doubles matches via 8-6 and 7-5 tiebreakers which clinched the doubles point for the Ospreys.

Falcone carried her doubles success to the singles court when she knocked off Melanie Aguirre of the Ospreys 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 3 position.

Senior Irene Viana (Paris, France) also chipped in a win in the No. 6 spot when she came back in a tough 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-7) match to end the day’s events.

“This spring break trip was a great team-building experience,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “Everyone got along wonderfully and I feel like we grew as a team. We came up short today and North Florida deserves a great amount of credit for that. However, during this trip we identified what we need to work on as a team to be ready to face one of the best groups of Southern Conference programs in recent memory.”

CofC will next be in action on Saturday, March 9 when they host a doubleheader against Jacksonville State and Penn State. First serve versus the Gamecocks will be at 9:30 a.m. (ET) followed by a 2 p.m. (ET) match against the Nittany Lions at the College of Charleston Tennis at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
