MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The No. 61-ranked College of Charleston women’s tennis team overcame East Tennessee State 4-1 this afternoon at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

CofC improves to 7-5 with the win while the Buccaneers fall to 4-4.

The Cougars started well in doubles when senior Irene Viana (Paris, France) and freshman Katherine Schofield (Franklin, Tenn.) knocked off Larn McShane and Antonia Kolovou of ETSU 8-3 on Court 1.

The Greensboro, N.C. duo of senior Christin Newman and freshman Brooke McAmis followed suit when they picked up an 8-4 win on Court 3 to clinch the doubles point for the College.

There was a little bit of a scare for CofC when sophomore Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) dropped her singles match to Lyn Yee Choo of the Bucs 6-0, 6-4 on Court 4.

However, Schofield made up for Falcone’s loss when she beat out Sofia Espana 6-1, 6-1 on Court 6.

The ever-solid Newman took her doubles success to the singles court and cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Giulia Andreazza of ETSU on Court 1.

Then, in a comeback effort, sophomore Samantha Maddox topped Jessica Brumit of the Bucs 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 to seal the overall win for the Cougars.

“I was very pleased with the team’s performance, we’re definitely moving in the right direction,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “We improved in the areas that we needed to after our last match and I was very impressed with the team’s energy level. That was a great win for us over a very well-coached team, Coach Travis always does a good job and I’m sure they’re going to do very well in the Atlantic Sun conference.”

The Cougars will next be in action on Monday, March 18 when they host Wichita State at 1 p.m. (ET) at the College of Charleston Tennis Center.
