Women's Tennis Sweeps Davidson, 7-0
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team continued its winning ways with a 7-0 sweep of Davidson in Southern Conference action held on Saturday afternoon at the Covington Tennis Courts.
The Cougars (10-7, 2-0 SoCon) have now won three in a row and remain undefeated in league play. CofC won five of the six singles matches in straight sets and two of its three doubles pro-sets by five games or better.
Senior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) led the way with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Davidson’s Brites Moniz-Soares at the top of the singles order, while junior Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) won a three-set decision over Elaina Cummer, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, at No. 2 singles.
Sophomore Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) played in front of her hometown crowd and defeated Nisha Crouser, 6-4, 7-6, at the No. 3 line. She also combined with Kambourelis for a No. 2 doubles victory over Crouser and Stephani Synn, 8-1.
The closest the Wildcats (7-5, 0-3 SoCon) came against the four-time defending league champions was a two-game, 9-7 loss at No. 1 doubles to senior Irene Viana (Paris, France) and freshman Katherine Schofield (Franklin, Tenn.). The Cougars’ top tandem improved to a team-best 7-5 on the season.
“The team has consistently improved over the last several matches,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “This was our most complete performance this season. Davidson is a very good team – to beat them indoors makes it even more meaningful. I was especially proud of Davidson resident, Jenny Falcone. for her performance and wanted to thank her parents, Doug and Sue Falcone, for bringing out most of the town of Davidson, including Mayor John Woods, to cheer the Cougars on for the win.”
CofC will continue its two-match SoCon road swing at Appalachian State tomorrow at 10 a.m. (ET) in Boone, N.C.
