SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston’s Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) has been named Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played March 18-24, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
Newman went a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles competition during a busy week for the Cougars as CofC went 4-2 with four-straight victories over Albany (6-1), UMBC (7-0), Davidson (7-0) and Appalachian State (5-2).
Newman ran her record to 12-5 on the year with five victories at No. 1 singles last week. All five wins came in straight sets. She began the week with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Wichita State’s Rebecca Pedrazzi, before cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cornell’s Christine Ordway.
In her final non-conference match of the week, Newman topped UMBC’s Isabel Aldunate with two love games, 6-0, 6-0. Competing in SoCon matches, she posted wins over Davidson’s Brites Moniz-Soares (6-3, 6-1) and Appalachian State’s Ellie Linsell (6-4, 6-1)
Newman also went 3-0 in doubles play and competed in two other matches that were unfinished. She paired with freshman Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) at No. 3 doubles against Cornell coming away with an 8-3 win over Dena Tanenbaum and Laila Judeh.
In two conference matches over the weekend, Newman and sophomore Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) went 2-0 for the Cougars at No. 3 doubles. The CofC pair earned an 8-3 victory over Davidson’s Frizzi Bschorer and Catherine Wood, before racing past ASU’s Clare Cox and Briana Armellino, 8-1.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Ellie Linsell, Elon’s Jordan Johnston, Furman’s Lauren Kline, Georgia Southern’s Caitlin Kitchen, UNCG’s Stephanie Falcon, Samford’s Stephanie N’tcha and Chattanooga’s Kelsey Coots.
