MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The No. 68-ranked Elon Phoenix dealt the No. 75-ranked College of Charleston women’s tennis team its first Southern Conference loss of the season this afternoon via a 5-2 score at the College of Charleston Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (11-8, 3-0 SoCon) were on a four-match winning streak coming into the match and had just beaten Southern Conference foes Davidson and Appalachian State over the weekend.

Elon (15-3, 5-2 SoCon) has had a great season so far and lived up to its record in today’s match.

The College started off well in doubles when junior Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) and sophomore teammate Jenny Falcone (Davidson, N.C.) knocked off Viviana Stavreva and Maria Camara Ruiz of the Phoenix 8-4 on Court 2.

Senior and reigning SoCon Player of the Week Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) and her sophomore partner Samantha Maddox (Lexington, Ky.) closed out the doubles point with an 8-4 victory over Briana Berne and Taylor Casey of Elon on Court 3 to put CofC ahead in the match.

Singles proved to be more challenging for the Cougars as only freshman Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) managed a win even though three of the CofC singles matches went three sets. McAmis improved her singles season record to 7-4 when she took down Stavreva 6-1, 6-2 on Court 3.

“Today was a disappointing loss,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “Elon fought harder than us in singles and had more energy than we did – they really deserved the win. Unfortunately we suffered another injury today in freshman Katherine Schofield (Franklin, Tenn.) who has been playing great recently so some of our other singles players will have to step up when we play a very talented UNCG team on Friday.”

The Cougars will have one day of practice before they face No. 70-ranked UNCG (9-4) on Friday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m. (ET) at Patriots Point.
