SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston’s Christin Newman earned Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Month honors as announced by the league office on Friday.
Newman, a senior right-hander from Greensboro, N.C., compiled a 9-3 record at No. 1 singles and a combined 8-2 mark at No. 2 and 3 doubles in the month of March for the Cougars.
After opening the month 2-2 in singles play, including a loss to No. 47-ranked Petra Januskova of No. 34 Penn State, Newman finished the month with seven wins in her last eight matches. Eight of her nine singles wins in the month came in straight sets, beginning with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Andrea Crespo of Stetson that clinched the 4-3 win for CofC on March 2.
In doubles play, Newman won her final eight matches with teammate Samantha Maddox at the No. 2 and 3 lines. She was named SoCon Player of the Week on March 26 after a week in which she went a combined 8-0 in singles and doubles combined.
Newman was also named one of the SoCon’s postgraduate scholars in the month, earning the Dorothy Hicks Graduate Scholarship. The Cougars faced three nationally-ranked opponents in the month of March in Penn State, No. 68 Elon and No. 70 UNCG.
Other nominees included Ellie Linsell of Appalachian State, Nisha Crouser of Davidson, Frida Jansaker of Elon, Lauren Kline of Furman, Paola Garrido of Georgia Southern, Alex Whitehead of UNCG, Emily Mallory of Samford and Kelsey Coots of Chattanooga.
