ELON, N.C. – Southern Conference opponent Elon edged the College of Charleston men’s tennis team 4-3 this afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The loss snaps the College’s eight-match win streak and drops its record to 10-7, 5-3 in the SoCon. With the win, Elon keeps its No. 1 spot in the SoCon with a 7-0 record in conference, 14-5 overall.

The Phoenix started off strong in doubles, winning all three matches to clinch the point for Elon.

Elon kept rolling in singles when the team won its first two matches to put the overall score at 3-0.

CofC responded when sophomore Charlie Ghriskey (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) topped Jordan Kaufman of the Phoenix 6-2, 6-4 on Court 4.

Freshman Zack Lewis (Richmond, Ky.) kept it rolling for the College when he defeated Juan Madrid of Elon 6-4, 6-2 on Court 6.

Junior Crescente Lesser (Santiago, Chile) evened the score at 3-3 when he came back to win via a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 score over Robert Lindgren at the No. 3 line.

Unfortunately, CofC came up just short when No. 45-ranked Cameron Silverman beat junior Brice Allanic (Colombes, France) of the Cougars in a third-set tiebreaker to seal the overall win for the Phoenix.

“Elon did not give up anything today,” CofC Head Coach Jay Bruner said. “We had to earn the points we got. We had chances to win the match which was a good sign. It will be a test for us to show up and compete even better tomorrow. This is what we have to go through to improve.”

The College will head east across the state to take on East Carolina tomorrow, April 7 at noon (ET) at the River Birch Tennis Center in Greenville, N.C.
