SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston’s Zack Lewis (Richmond, Ky.) has been named Southern Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played from April 8-14, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Lewis, a freshman right-hander, went 4-0 in singles and doubles play last week combined as the Cougars won a pair of conference matches and climbed into a tie for second place to close out the regular season. CofC topped Wofford (5-2), before knocking off UNCG (5-2) in both team’s regular-season finale.
Playing at the No. 5 position for the Cougars, Lewis came away with two straight-set wins last week. He downed Wofford’s Tom Wood, 6-2, 6-2, before topping UNCG’s Daniel Mack, 7-6, 6-0. With his two victories last week, Lewis ran his undefeated singles win streak to 12 matches and finished the year a team-best 10-0 in conference play.
He also teamed with Alon Faiman at No. 3 doubles for the Cougars and the duo went 2-0 last week with victories over Wofford’s Graham Duncan and Drew Superstein (8-2) and UNCG’s William Albright and Jimmy Roueche (8-6). It marked Lewis’ first career weekly honor.
The Cougars (12-8, 7-3 SoCon) earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming SoCon Men’s Tennis Championships this weekend in Elon, N.C. CofC will take on either Georgia Southern (11-8, 6-4 SoCon) or The Citadel (7-13, 0-10 SoCon) in quarterfinal action on Friday afternoon.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Steve Karendal, Davidson’s Robert Lightburn, Elon’s Stefan Fortmann, Furman’s Andrew Mellow, Georgia Southern’s Rayane Djouad, UNCG’s Randy Phillips, Samford’s Alex Sajonz and UTC’s Manuel Barroetavena.
