CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 2013 Southern Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will kick off this Thursday, April 18 with matches being played at Elon University at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center and the Burlington Tennis Center in Elon, N.C.

The winner of the SoCon Tennis Championships will receive the SoCon’s automatic bid into the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championships which will take place in mid-May.

The No. 75- ranked College of Charleston women’s team (17-8, 9-1 SoCon) will look to defend last year’s tournament title under 22nd-year head coach and 2013 Southern Conference Coach of the Year Angelo Anastopoulo. The College has won the tournament the last four years and earned the right to represent the SoCon in the NCAA Tournament.

The Cougars are the No. 1 seed in this year’s tournament after they clinched the SoCon regular season title with a win over Western Carolina on April 13.

The team played very well in both singles and doubles this season, as no singles player or doubles duo lost more than three matches in conference play. Senior Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) capped off a stellar College of Charleston career by being named the 2013 Southern Conference Player of the Year, making her the first Cougar player to earn the honor. Freshman Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) earned a place on the six-player All-Freshman Team after she played to a 12-5 mark with a 7-1 conference tally in No. 3 singles.

The women’s team has earned a first-round bye and will play the winner between No. 8 seed Samford and No. 9 seed Davidson on April 19 at 9 a.m. (ET) at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

CofC’s men’s squad (12-8, 7-3 SoCon) heads into the tournament as the No. 3 seed under sixth-year head coach Jay Bruner. The men’s team will also look to defend last year’s Southern Conference tournament title after it finished this season tied for second place in the conference with Samford and UNCG.

Freshman Zack Lewis (Richmond, Ky.) received a second team all-conference nod along with SoCon All-Freshman Team honors for his performance this year in No. 6 singles. Lewis was a perfect 10-0 against Southern Conference opponents this year and has won his last 12 matches en route to an 18-2 singles record. The SoCon also named Lewis its Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season.

The men’s side has earned a first-round tournament bye and will face the winner between No. 6 seed Georgia Southern and No. 11 seed The Citadel on April 19 at 1 p.m. (ET) at the Burlington Tennis Center.
