ELON, N.C. – The No. 75-ranked College of Charleston women’s tennis team rolled to a 4-0 win this morning over Samford in the first round of the Southern Conference Championships at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

The match started with singles play as there was concern of impending weather.

Freshman Katherine Schofield (Franklin, Tenn.) started things off by winning her fourth match in a row after suffering an injury in late march. Schofield knocked off AnnMarie Lyon of the Bulldogs 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6 line.

Junior Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.) kept the ball rolling when she won her second consecutive match via a 6-4, 6-2 result over Stephanie N’tcha on Court 2.

All-Freshman team selection Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) brought the match score to 3-0 when she defeated Jessica Northcutt of Samford 6-2, 6-3 on Court 3.

Then, senior and Southern Conference Player of the Year Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) finished off the match when she bested Kristin Lewis 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 position.

“I was worried going into the match today,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “Samford played UNCG and Chattanooga to 4-3 so we knew that they’re capable of playing well. We played one of our best matches today and I’m proud of how our two freshmen performed in their first Southern Conference tournament matches. They got us two of the four points we needed today.”

The Cougars’ next match of the tournament will be against UNCG on Saturday, April 20 at 10 a.m. (ET) at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
