Sand Volleyball Splits Duals At FSU Tournament

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – College of Charleston split its two dual matches in tournament competition at Florida State on Saturday.

The Cougars defeated Georgia State, 3-2, in a dual and fell to No. 3 Florida State, 5-0.

Against the Panthers, CofC won the three through five slots to take the dual win. Kelly Kolich and Emily Neideffer won in three sets (14-21, 21-15, 16-14), as did Sloane White and Taeler Davis (21-18, 16-21, 15-8). Emily Shelton and Catey Warren won in two sets by scores of 21-15 and 21-18.

Top pair Lizzie Theesfeld and Melissa Morello lost two close sets, 21-19, 21-18, while second pair Darcy Dorton and Andi Zbojniewicz lost 21-10, 21-15 to Georgia State.

Playing against the talented Seminoles, Dorton and Zbojniewicz fought hard to take their pairing to three close sets before falling 19-21, 23-21, 15-12. CofC was unable to win sets in the other pairings against Florida State, falling in the dual by a score of 5-0.

In the first day of bracket play, the CofC pair of Theesfeld/Morello advanced in the gold division with a three-set win over UAB’s Ally Slaughter/Kirsten Gallagher (20-22, 21-13, 15-10). UAB’s Kiriana Hirini/Bethanie Thomas prevailed over Dorton and Zbojniewicz in their gold division match by a score of 14-21, 21-15, 17-15.

In the silver division, Florida State’s Mallory Kiley/Fatma Yildirim scored a win over Shelton/Warren by scores of 21-18, 21-14. The Seminoles also picked up a win with Stephanie Pelletteri/Kristina Pelletteri defeating White and Davis, 22-20, 21-10.

Bracket play continues from Florida State tomorrow morning.
