SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston freshman right-hander Brooke McAmis (Greensboro, N.C.) was named Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Month as announced by the league office on Friday.
McAmis, who was selected to the SoCon All-Freshman Team, excelled on the court in the month of April helping the Cougars to an undefeated 8-0 record including their fifth-consecutive SoCon Championship crown. She went 7-1 in singles play in the month, notching all seven of her wins in straight-sets by dominant scores and all but one at the No. 3 position.
In her seven wins, McAmis allowed no more than three games in any set. Five times, she allowed three or fewer games total highlighted by a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Wofford’s Julia Paulson on April 12. The following day, she rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 decision against Western Carolina’s Sara Ruiz Pajares at No. 2 singles and closed the month out with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Elon’s Viviana Stavreva in the SoCon tournament title match on April 21.
McAmis began her win streak with 6-0, 6-3 tally over Furman’s Katherine Oudin on April 3 and a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Samford’s Jessica Northcutt on April 6. In the SoCon semifinals, McAmis clinched the match against UNCG with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Alex Whitehead on April 20.
McAmis also compiled a 1-1 mark at No. 3 doubles. She teamed with senior teammate Irene Viana (Paris, France) for an 8-3 win over Samford’s Jessica Northcutt and Emily Mallory on April 6.
Other SoCon women’s tennis nominees included Gabriela Celi of Appalachian State, Katherine Oudin of Furman and Paola Garrido of Georgia Southern.
