CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team is pleased to announce that Mara Argyriou (Limassol, Cyprus) will be joining the team this fall as an incoming freshman. Argyriou comes to CofC having been ranked as high as the No. 280 junior in the world by the International Tennis Federation.
Argyriou has held the No. 1 junior ranking in her home country of Cyprus at a variety of age ranges. She claimed the No. 1 position for 14&unders, 16&unders and even 18&unders when she was only 15 in 2012.
Argyriou also competed for the Cypriot Fed Cup team in 2012 and 2013, posting an overall 5-3 singles record. She was named the Female Tennis Player of the Year in Cyprus in 2011 after she became the first Cypriot female to medal at the European Small States Games when she claimed bronze medals in both singles and doubles.
“We’re thrilled to have Mara join the team next year,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “I’m sure that her many years of international experience and travel have prepared her to be very competitive in college. She’ll be entering CofC at the young age of 16 and I’m confident that her youthful enthusiasm will be contagious amongst the other players. We’re very excited to have yet another very gifted student-athlete join our team.”
