SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Twenty-one College of Charleston student-athletes earned spots on the 2013 Spring Academic All-Southern Conference Team, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

A total of 323 student-athletes were honored by the league, a number which surpassed last year’s spring total by 13. All 12 SoCon institutions were represented in the sports of baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.

Southern Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Year Christin Newman (Greensboro, N.C.) headlined the 14 student-athletes who boasted a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade-point average along with junior teammate Kelly Kambourelis (Melbourne, Fla.). Newman graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a minor in mathematics in May, while Kambourelis is majoring in communication.

Right-handed pitcher Matt Pegler (Greenville, S.C.) earned a 3.56 GPA and graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. In his final season with the Cougars, Pegler ended the year ranked among the top 10 SoCon statistical leaders with a 3.62 ERA.

To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
