CofC Women Place Second at Navy Fall Women's Regatta

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The ninth-ranked College of Charleston women’s sailing team placed second on the final day of the Navy Fall Women’s regatta hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy on Annapolis Harbor.

No. 1-ranked Yale won the event with a total of 302 points across all three divisions followed by CofC with 375 points. Navy was third (395), Stanford fourth (439) and Hobart & William Smith fifth (440). It was the first major intersectional women’s regatta of the fall season for the Cougars.

Junior Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) skippered A-Division to a fifth-place finish with senior crew Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.), while senior skipper Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) led B-Division to a 30-point victory over Navy alongside junior crew Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) in races 1-9 and sophomore crew Charlotte Saxe (Wilton, Conn.) in races 10-18.

Sophomore Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) competed in lasers in C-Division and placed eighth with 152 points. Last year, the CofC women placed fourth in the 16-team field.

Up North at the Moody Trophy regatta hosted by the University of Rhode Island, the coed sailing team finished sixth out of 17 competing schools. Boston College won the event with 116 points followed by Harvard (132), Yale (135), Roger Williams (140), Dartmouth (149) and CofC (161). A combined 10 races were sailed on Saturday and Sunday amid favorable racing conditions.

The Cougars were in second after day one behind BC, but placed fifth overall in A-Division on Sunday behind sophomore skipper Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.) and junior crew Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.) and eighth in B-Division with the rotation of junior skipper Chris Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) and sophomore crew Michaela Reynolds (Providence, R.I.).

Over in Wilmington, N.C., CofC won the two-division North Points #4 regatta hosted by UNC Wilmington courtesy of freshmen Declan Whitmyer (Stamford, Conn.) and Irene Abascal (Guatamala City, Guatamala) in A-Division and freshman Jack Cusick (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Septima McAdams (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) in B-Division.

In the Cougars’ offshore sailing debut of the fall season, sophomore Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) skippered CofC to a first-place finish in the J/105, One Design Division at the Intercollegiate Offshore regatta held at the Larchmont Yacht Club in Larchmont, N.Y. The squad won both races ahead of Navy, Roger Williams, Yale, Bowdoin College, Wisconsin, European Business School, Syracuse, Columbia, Northeastern and American.

Davidson was joined by the crew of sophomore Stefan Kuehn (Charleston, S.C.), junior Timmy Crann (Red Bank, N.J.), junior Brandon Folkman (Redondo Beach, Calif.), junior Charles Essi (Cleveland, Ohio) and sophomore Hanna Horan (Newport, R.I.).

Three weekend regattas are up next for CofC with the Navy Fall Intersectional hosted by Navy on Oct. 19-20 in Annapolis, Md., the Yale Women’s Intersectional hosted by Yale in New London, Conn., and North Points #5 hosted by Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Ga.
