CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston coed sailing team won the home-hosted SAISA Match Race event, while finishing 11th at the Sherman Hoyt Trophy regatta on Oct. 26-27 in Providence, R.I.
CofC hosted Georgia Tech, Eckerd College and South Florida at the J. Stewart Sailing Complex. Two full round robins in J/22’s were completed and the final race of the event determined the eventual winner.
Sophomore skipper Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) led the Cougars to a close victory over USF with the crew of junior Brandon Folkman (Redondo Beach, Calif.), junior All-American Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) and Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.).
CofC went 2-1 in the first round robin with wins over Eckerd and Georgia Tech and a perfect 3-0 in the second round robin for a 5-1 overall record. USF went 4-2 for second-place honors followed by Eckerd (3-3) in third and Georgia Tech (0-5) in fourth at the in-district event.
Up north in New England, CofC braved a cold and windy day on the water at the Hoyt Trophy regatta. Junior skipper Nick Johnstone (Newport, R.I.) and sophomore crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.) placed ninth in a head-to-head tiebreaker with Rhode Island in A-Division, while sophomore skipper Reed Baldridge (Clear Lake, Texas) and freshman crews Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Ian Dilling (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) finished 16th in a head-to-head tiebreaker with Old Dominion in B-Division. Dapp sailed in races 1-2, 7-10 and Dilling in races 3-6, 11-12.
Up next, the Cougars will host the SAISA Fall Coed regatta on Nov. 2-3 in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
