CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s tennis team has released its 2014 schedule as announced by head coach Jay Bruner on Monday.
The Cougars will face 13 new teams this season from a year ago, including three squads ranked in the top 75 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Team Rankings in No. 23 Clemson, No. 44 UNC Wilmington and No. 71 North Florida.
“We have been working very hard this fall to get ready for the spring,” said Bruner. “We have found a rhythm as a team and that will be important with so many matches against strong competition on this year’s schedule. We are young, but also playing with seven returners from last year’s squad, so we bring experience as well. Being part of the CAA has given us a chance to take on a new schedule and it should be exciting.”
The Cougars enter their first year as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) fresh off the heels of a 13-9 campaign that saw them finish fourth in the Southern Conference last season.
The 2014 season kicks off for the Cougars at No. 23 Clemson on Jan. 31, and represents the first of six away matches to begin the season. Following Clemson, the Cougars take on Wofford on Feb. 1, Limestone College and Spartanburg Methodist College on Feb. 2, Winthrop on Feb. 9 and No. 44 UNC Wilmington on Feb. 16.
The home slate then begins for the Cougars with a Feb. 23, clash against Georgia Southern, as well as a Feb. 28 contest with Presbyterian.
The College then heads west to California for matches against UC Riverside on March 4, and Loyola Marymount on March 5 before returning to the Lowcountry to face James Madison on March 11.
Another home match against Big-10 power Iowa on March 14 awaits the Cougars before heading on the road to meet No. 71 North Florida in Jacksonville two days later, March 16.
After a home conference match against Hofstra on March 17, the Cougars take to the road again to face Hampton on March 22 as well as Old Dominion and Christopher Newport on March 23.
The Cougars close out their home schedule with regional rivals UNC Charlotte on March 28 and the Pirates of East Carolina on March 30 at Patriots Point.
A four-match road trip closes out the regular season for the College, consisting of The Citadel on April 2, Depaul on April 5, Georgia State on April 6 and Davidson on April 13.
The 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Tennis Championships will be held on April 18-21 and hosted by Willliam and Mary at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Va.
