WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The No. 2 seed College of Charleston men’s tennis team fell to UNC Wilmington on Sunday, 4-0, in the finals of the CAA Championships at the Millie West Tennis Facility on campus at the College of William & Mary.
The top-seeded Seahawks (15-6), who are ranked 46th nationally by the ITA, earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship where they will be making their fifth appearance in the last six years. The victory also marked Wilmington’s fourth CAA men’s tennis championship in the past six years.
The Seahawks jumped out to an early advantage in doubles. UNCW’s No. 2 team of Pedro Mol and Kaue Pereira rolled over Crescente Lesser and Rodrigo Encinas, 8-2, before the Seahawks clinched the point at No. 1 when Rafael Aita and Sam Williams got past Brice Allanic and Alon Faiman, 8-5.
UNCW carried the momentum into singles, where it posted three straight-set victories. Aita, the CAA Player of the Year, cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Allanic at No. 1 and Pereira was close behind at No. 4, beating Zack Lewis, 6-1, 6-4 to make it 3-0. The match ended at the No. 5 flight when Santtu Leskinen topped Charlie Ghriskey, 6-1, 6-2.
It was UNCW’s ninth consecutive win.
The Cougars (18-6), who are ranked 66th nationally by the ITA, had its seven-match winning streak snapped.
